About
James Lewis is a freelance photographer based in Brighton whose range of subjects extends from reportage style portraits through architectural and construction to landscape photography. With a passion for documentary type portraits his instinctive ability to engage with the subject puts them at their ease and helps draw them out of themselves so creating images reflecting the nature of the sitter’s mood and personality. Many years experience of working with individuals and groups in social, formal and work settings enable him to produce truthful and objective images appropriate for a range of uses.
He says about working on Scanning for Gold: “I found the whole process of photographing these sports people a great privilege; the dedication and focus and attention to detail was incredible. My background in live photography tends to a more contrived and stylised thing; this couldn’t have been more different. The athletes commitment and drive is etched onto their faces. A highlight for me was Halil’s lift in the gym – he wasn’t going to contrive anything; he proceeded to lift and equal the British junior weightlifting record”.
